Olympia – An 85 year-old woman was crossing Lilly Road near Providence St. Peter Hospital at around 2 pm yesterday when she was hit by a commercial truck described by witnesses as a “shredder” belonging to LeMay Inc. The truck was making a left onto Lily Road from Ensign Road when it hit her.
She was walking in a crosswalk, Olympia police Lt. Ray Holmes said.
The woman suffered serious trauma to her head and torso, and she was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital. Despite her close proximity to the hospital her injuries were such that she died shortly after, Holmes confirmed.
Holmes did not have information about whether the driver of the truck, Daniel Jones, 23, of Centralia, will be cited for any traffic violations.
Commercial vehicles driving through residential areas and high traffic areas, even at slow speeds, have problems stopping and could still surge forward for several feet while braking. They also have considerable blind spots. Though the woman who died is not at fault, it is important that pedestrians make eye contact with the driver of any commercial vehicle prior to crossing the street.
Our thoughts and condolences go with the family of the deceased.
