Bicyclist Sustains Broken Bones in Rural Road Collision in Cheney

Cheney-Plaza Road 2 miles outside of CheneyTheodore Chauvin, 36, was seriously injured while riding his bike Thursday evening on Cheney-Plaza Road when he was struck by a car in the southbound lane of the road two miles south of Cheney.

Chauvin suffered a broken leg and broken shoulder and was taken to Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane for treatment.

Chauvin was hit about 6:15 p.m. by a 1997 Kia Sophia driven by William Knight Jr., 47, of the Williams Lake area. Knight told deputies he attempted to avoid the bicyclist. There were also earlier reports that Chauvin was riding in the wrong lane, but further investigation proved that wrong.

Riding on rural roads can be dangerous, particularly if there is no shoulder or if vehicles have to drive into on-coming traffic lanes to pass the slower moving bicyclist. Regardless of this, bicyclists have every right to ride safely with the normal flow of traffic. Please be careful of bicyclists in both rural and urban roads.
