Logging roads can be some of the trickiest roads to traverse for just a regular driver in a car or pickup because of the thin single lane and abrupt edges to the road. It takes an expert and a tremendous amount of patience to drive a giant logging truck with a full load down one of them. Drivers often help each other, but this morning the teamwork had fatal results.
A 25-year-old man was crushed to death around 8 am this morning after a large dump truck and trailer rolled over on its side.
The Washington State Patrol says that a truck was pulling a large dump trailer loaded with trees and brush about nine miles north of Sedro Woolley on a logging road near Cokedale Road.
The victim was riding on the left running board outside of the truck, apparently watching how the driver negotiated the corners. WSP understands that neither the victim nor the 25 year old driver was familiar with this road. The victim’s identical truck was parked farther down the hill.
When the truck he was riding on approached a turn about 6.6 miles up the mountainside, it rolled over, pinning the victim under the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s name has not been released, and the crash is still under investigation, Leary said. Our condolences go out to the young man’s family.
It is extremely important that a company, whether it is a logging company or a transport company, provide the proper amount of training and set in place safety policies that prevent these types of tragedies from happening. If either driver had had a proper orientation of the road and its dangers then this accident may not have happened. Now a man is dead.
