Drifting accidents are common on Eastern Washington rural highways as they seem to go on straight forever across the, at times, barren desert-like landscape. This can lead to people losing attention or even falling asleep from the monotony. It has not yet been determined what caused the motorcycle accident on Wednesday afternoon outside of Othello, but that very well could have been a factor.
The accident happened about 7 miles south of Othello when a van traveling northbound crossed the center line and struck two out of three motorcycles traveling southbound, according to Washington State Troopers.
One man, Kenneth Owens, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Robert Owens, 76, suffered hand and internal injuries and was air-lifted to a nearby hospital.
The third motorcyclist, Michael Willard, 73, and driver of the van, John Mosley, 61 were not injured.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased and we wish the injured rider a swift recovery.
When taking that long road trip this summer it could be hot. Heat waves off of the pavement in front of you could obstruct oncoming traffic. Please be aware of this and pay extra attention to not drift.
