The spotlight has been switched on and is shining bright on all local hospital pediatric wards after the reports of suspected medication errors one week apart from each other that allegedly killed two infants at Children’s Hospital. This has put the media on alert, swirling and searching for related stories that can retain the short attention span of the public.
When it comes to infant death due to medical malpractice, we hoped that the subject would drop quickly, but unfortunately another infant has died due to alleged failure to run the proper tests and failure to diagnose, this time by another pediatric hospital in Tacoma.
According to the Tacoma News Tribune, Federal Way police have opened an investigation into the death of an 8-month-old girl on Wednesday evening.
Apparently it all began when the parents called 911 in the morning on Wednesday because they thought the baby may have found and swallowed prescription pills. Paramedics rushed to the home and took the baby to Mary Bridge children’s hospital for examination and possible treatment.
The staff at the hospital examined the baby. It is currently unknown what tests or procedures they performed, but the hospital released her after only two hours of examination. The father says they were told the baby would be fine. They took their child home and put the baby to bed. Three hours later she was dead.
A spokesperson for the Mary Bridge children’s hospital says that they can’t release patient information but the institution will cooperate with police.
Investigators say that they are waiting for results of toxicology tests and will proceed accordingly from there.
Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased child.
