Head-on Collision - Washington StateA multi-car accident occurred this month in Eatonville when a 48-year-old man crashed his pickup truck head-on into another truck on State Route 7. Glenn T. Fitting was on his way to the hospital complaining of chest pain and back pain. According to the Washington State Patrol, it appears that Fitting had a fatal heart attack that caused him to crash his truck head-on into a Chevy pickup carrying two adults and 4 children. The adults involved in the accident were listed in serious condition and one of the children was in critical condition at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center following the accident.

In Washington State there were 457 traffic fatalities in 2011 alone. While head-on collisions are the least common of all accidents, they are the most deadly. For example, in 2005, head-on collisions in the United States accounted for only 2% of all crashes, yet 10% of all fatalities. The reason is because head-on collisions rarely give either driver a chance to slow down or even maneuver to avoid them. The result is an accident that occurs at high speed and with little warning.

According to FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) 75% of all head on collisions occur on undivided, two lane rural highways. The majority of these accidents occur when drivers are distracted, impaired, or asleep behind the wheel of the vehicle.

Due to the high rates of speed associated with head-on collisions, the injuries that are sustained are usually severe and life threatening. Common head-on accident injuries include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Disfigurement
  • Spinal Cord injuries
  • Paralysis
  • Loss of limbs
  • Severe soft tissue injuries
  • Fractures
  • And more
