Yasmin Injuries Attorney in Washington

Compensation for Harmful Side Effects

Kidney Damage, Heart Attack, Stroke, Pumonary Embolism, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Unfortunately, reports of Yasmin side effects eventually began to surface, prompting reactions from several different fronts. Below you’ll find a brief introduction to Yasmin, the Yasmin side effects that were reported, problems that Bayer Healthcare has encountered with the government and finally how you should proceed if you or someone you love has suffered as a result of developing Yasmin side effects.

Learn About Yasmin Birth Control

Yasmin was presented for approval by Bayer Healthcare early in the 21st Century, and it was ultimately approved for marketing, sale and distribution in the American market by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001. Since that time, it’s estimated that Yasmin has generated several billion dollars in revenue for Bayer Healthcare, and Yasmin’s functions were two-fold in number:

  1. Yasmin prevents ovulation in women, making it impossible for an egg to become available for fertilization.
  2. Even if an egg somehow becomes fertilized, Yasmin prompts changes in the physiological structure of the female reproductive system, making it impossible for a fertilized egg to attach to the wall of the uterus.

Based on these functions, Yasmin was seen as a success during its first few years on the market. The active ingredients in Yasmin, known as drospirenone and ethinylestradiol, were seen as the primary reasons for its success, but unfortunately, reports of serious Yasmin side effects eventually began to surface.

Yasmin Side Effects – What Went Wrong

Within the past few years, reports of serious Yasmin side effects began to surface from those who were using the medication, and these side effects included:

While kidney damage, heart attacks and strokes are all well-known medical problems, pulmonary embolisms and DVT are otherwise rare medical conditions that were soon linked to Yasmin given the prevalence of these conditions arising in women who had used the medication.

In fact, DVT and pulmonary embolisms are at least loosely related conditions. DVT is a condition whereby blood clots form deep inside the tissue of the woman’s body, most commonly in the leg/thigh areas. When these blood clots grow to a certain size, they tend to detach and make their way through the circulatory system before settling in the lungs. When blood clots appear in the lungs, either because they formed there or settled there, they are known as pulmonary embolisms.

Eventually, these blood clots create severe damage to the woman’s circulatory and respiratory system, and each of them can be fatal if they are not diagnosed early and treated aggressively. The problem with each condition is that their symptoms are somewhat nebulous in nature, making it difficult for women to recognize the presence of a problem in the first place. As a result, several women have died because of Yasmin side effects and many more were seriously injured.

Yasmin, The FDA and Regulations

When a drug that’s seen as revolutionary hits an exploding market like that of birth control, a company that’s behind that product tends to market it very aggressively. That’s what occurred with Yasmin, although the tone and messages present in these advertisements soon drew the ire of government officials on at least three occasions.

In the years 2003, 2008 and 2008, Bayer Healthcare ran television advertisements that were seen as potentially misleading in regards to the safety of Yasmin and the conditions for which it was approved to treat, and some of these advertisement pieces contained music that was allegedly designed to drown out the warnings of Yasmin side effects.

The FDA and as many as 27 Attorneys General of different jurisdictions around the country sent warning letters to Bayer Healthcare when these concerns arose, and ultimately Bayer Healthcare pulled these advertisements from the airwaves in order to avoid further scrutiny and potential remedies from both the federal and several state governments and enforcement agencies.
