Phillips Law Firm offers its A Second Chance Scholarship so that victims of traumatic car accidents can have an opportunity to have their struggles recognized. The scholarship promises $2,500 to a student looking to continue their education following a life-changing collision.
This year, our Seattle car accident lawyers want to uplift Ibrahim Hassen, a Business Administration major at California Polytechnic State University. Hassen’s moving scholarship video goes into detail about a collision that has continued to impact his mental health.
According to Hassen, his accident has transformed his perspectives on mental health and moved him to support other victims of devastating accidents. The personal injury lawyers with Phillips Law Firm are proud to offer him the financial support he needs to continue his academic career.
Hassen’s Life-Changing Car Accident
At seven years old, Ibrahim Hassen and his family fell victim to a devastating collision. On the way to his grandparents’ house, Hassen’s mother fell asleep at the wheel of their car, leading the car to collide with a steel post. Hassen, sitting in the middle seat, didn’t benefit from the protection of a traditional seat belt and collided with the seat in front of him.
Unfortunately, a piece of plastic pierced Hassen’s forehead upon the collision. When he woke up three days later, he found himself in the ICU with 84 stitches in his head. His mother broke 13 bones, and his older sister broke her arm, but his two younger siblings were thankfully unharmed.
The outcome of that accident saw Hassen deal with more than physical injuries. In his video, he reports that he continues to struggle with mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression. He also has difficulty maintaining personal and professional relationships, even as he’s pushed himself to succeed throughout his academic career.
Retaking Control of a Changed Life
However, Hassen’s story is one of determination. While anxiety and depression are part of his everyday life, he doesn’t let his mental health conditions dictate his successes. Instead, he’s dedicated himself to the betterment of others.
He reports that in the past ten years, he’s participated in five volunteer trips to the border of Syria and Turkey, where he assists with the delivery of food and medical assistance to Syrian refugees and orphans.
He also hopes to help others contending with mental health conditions caused by traumatic crashes and other events, ideally by starting a foundation to promote mental health awareness and discussion. He emphasizes that car accident survivors are not alone and that “there is growth and prosperity to be found.”

Ibrahim Hassen Has Big Plans for the Future
Today, Hassen is a student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. He is pursuing a major in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing. At the same time, he continues to volunteer with international organizations, providing what aid he can to victims of tragedies around the world.
When asked what inspired him to pursue a Business Administration degree, Hassen says, “Business has always been a passion of mine, and I have rarely thought there was another path for me outside of business. I plan to start a business while I attend school and pursue my dreams in real time.”
Once he graduates, Hassen hopes to stand at the helm of his own business and develop a strategy for growth that allows him to continue to learn in a professional environment. He also wants to have time to travel the world. “I look forward to wherever life takes me,” he says, “and that excites me every day.”
