Snow Driving - Seattle Auto Accident AttorneysDo you think you drive safely in snowy or icy weather? If you answered yes, then you are among the majority, according to a recent poll from PEMCO insurance. 4 out of 5 Northwest drivers believed that they were just as skilled or more skilled at driving safely in the snow than their fellow drivers. Even more shocking—only 37% of Washington drivers actually took basic safety precautions, such as carrying chains in their cars and over 53% didn’t even know how to install tire chains. This misguided self-confidence can be dangerous on the roads.

It seems that where a driver lives in Washington may have something to do with their confidence in the snow and ice. 64% of Eastern Washington drivers say that they are comfortable driving in winter weather. This is in comparison to the 53% of drivers in Western Washington who felt the same way.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the majority of accidents in Washington occur in the fall and winter when weather conditions are not ideal. As such, safety experts urge drivers to stay indoors when weather is bad. Yet many drivers in Washington don’t heed these warnings.

While winter is already upon us, drivers in Seattle and throughout the State of Washington can learn from these polls. Always keep emergency kits in your vehicle and if you don’t have to venture out in bad weather—don’t. Stay indoors until the bad weather has passed and roads are cleared. This is the main way to prevent dangerous and deadly winter car accidents from occurring.

If you or someone you love is injured by a negligent driver this winter, it is important to speak to an auto accident attorney immediately. Your attorney will be able to review your case closely and help you obtain the compensation you need to recover from your injuries and put your life back together.
